Cambodian Women of Song – A tribute to Kak Channthy

Coming up in April, Women of Song will be a star-studded tribute to Channthy. We plan to bring to the stage a remarkable concert featuring some of the best female voices of Cambodia and beyond as well as spotlighting excellent up-and-coming artists.

Women of Song is a memorial event for Channthy and will be part of the fundraising drive to support Channthy’s young family via Kak Channthy Memorial Fund (the official legally registered trust). Financial contributions can be made at: https://www.gofundme.com/channthy

“Cambodian Women of Song” is also a tribute to Channthy’s extraordinary legacy – an internationally renowned Cambodian artist, as well as, an inspirational role model for young female artists and women of poor and disadvantaged communities.

The Cambodian Space Project with special guest musicians will be the ‘house band’ backing more than a dozen brilliant singers over 1 or two big nights. We’re planning to film this event as a Cambodia “Beuna Vista Social Club” so that the story, the performers and the magic music and voices can be shared with families, friends, fans and listeners everywhere!

Cambodian Women of Song will be staged sometime in April (anniversary of Channthy’s memorial concert held last year) and will be an event that is filmed and recorded with a view to adding this live concert footage to streaming via internet but also for editing into a film/documentary with additional footage from archive and interviews of the individual performers.

This project is in its first stages of planning – a call out seeking talent and support – and at this early stage we do not have budget or sponsors but will work over the coming weeks to find a way of achieving the points above and creating the first Cambodian concert series celebrating Cambodian Women of Song.

We are looking for a team of like-minded and dedicated individuals to make sure this is done as well as it should be and that the concert event produces something profoundly moving and special for all involved.

If you would like to participate or be involved then please feel free to get in touch, I’m looking forward to hearing thoughts and ideas and bringing together a great team of people and the beautiful voices! of Cambodia.

All the best,

Julien Poulson

Cambodian Women of Song – Mission

Firstly to support the family of Kak Channthy – The Cambodian Space Project

Secondly to ensure the legacy of Channthy’s life story and music is something that can have a positive impact and become an annual event to promote independent music and arts in Cambodia to a wider audience

Finally, to create an event that showcases to the world the power of Cambodia’s female voices – singers of all ages and walks of life – working together to create a great concert and a powerful message through the spirit of voice and song.

“Kak Channthy represented everything that is beautiful about Cambodia, the spirit of the oppressed and the poor. She lives on.”
